Let's revisit the last time that Jay-Z was in town, and Mary J Blige came along with him shall we? Let me take you back to Feb 4th, 2008:
This was the "Heart of the City" Tour, and was just as fabulous watching this footage as when I was really there! Come to think of it, I was ROW 3 Floors for that show too!
So Jay-Z brought a whole gang of support with him on this tour. J.Cole and Wale opened up the show. We just showed up in time to catch the last 2 Wale songs, and he did a pretty good job getting the crowd warmed up! In fact, he jumped into the crowd and rapped along with some of his biggest fans who came early.
Then came on N.E.R.D.. I saw them when they came with Kanye at the Glow In The Dark Tour, so it wasn't much new for me. I've always been a quiet NERD fan, but lately they've been getting on my nerves. Chad Hugo wasn't there, and for some reason it was decided that they needed a female voice in the group.

So, they brouht in Rhea who's originally from Ajax Ontario! Good for her, bad for the group, I think. Who are they trying to be now, the Black Eyed Peas? Isn't NERD based with the "Billionaire BOYS Club"? So now that there's a woman in heels hanging with the boys, are they going to achieve the 'cross-over' success that many groups want?
Meh, either way, Pharell does know music, and he knows how to rock a crowd.

I think I still like him as a producer and not as a front man though. His beats are calculated, simplistic, and hot like fire. As a singer though, if I had never known him for making beats, I would probably pass him over.
Oh, and the consummate act in all the N.E.R.D. performances... inviting the ladies up on stage. I know why they do it, I just don't understand why they have to do it at EVERY performance. The crazy other part is that the new girl Rhea fit right in with these girls! The only way you could tell that she was with the band was that she was holding her mic! Scary!

"All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom! All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom!"
And then after short intermission, and even a 2-minute countdown clock, enter Jay-Z.

Hov always knows how to control his audience. Heck, he's been doing it for 13 years!
My digi camera was acting up and I had no time to make the proper adjustments, so most of the pictures were taken with my BlackBerry! At least my BlackBerry was included in the "All Black Everything" theme for the night!

For whatever reason, I act like a geek at these shows. I would love to see it twice just so that the second time around I can just sit, stand, watch, sing, dance, and scream. Instead, I'm texting, making notes of the setlist, filming, snapping pictures, and singing, dancing, and screaming.
For those of you who are curious, the setlist was as follows:
Run This Town
D.O.A.
You Don't Know
99 Problems
Show Me What You Got
All I Need
Jigga My Ni**a
H to the Izzo
Jigga What
PSA
Ain't No Love
Already Home
Empire State of Mind w/Bridget Kelly
A Star Is Born w/J.Cole
So Ambitious w/Pharrell
Successful - Drake
Dirt Off Your Shoulders
Thank You
On to the Next One
Excuse Me Miss
La La La (Excuse Me Miss remix)
Venus vs Mars
Bonnie and Clyde
Lucifer
Swagger Like Us
Can I Get a F*ck You
Big Pimpin
Hard Knock Life
Encore
What We Talkin Bout
"I See You" Audience recognition interlude
Forever Young
Yup, I'm just a geeked out fan geek like that. I didn't memorize the setlist by any means. That would truly be impressive.

It still kind of strikes me though, how lucky I am to have been able to see the only one performer that truly has me starstruck. And to be sitting in Row 3 on the floors TWICE is a whole other blessing!
I've seen my fair share of live shows, and Jay truly can keep a crowd entertained, even if you don't even know one single line of any of his songs!

I think he understands that as an artist/performer/entertainer, there are certain things that people want to see from you, and certain things that you are willing to show to them also. Many people I talked to balked because he didn't perform anything from Reasonable Doubt.
But like he says on his song "On to the Next One", "People want my old sh*t, buy my old albums!"

He definitely could have performed for at least another 2 hours straight with all the songs that he has in his catalogue! Even if it was a one-time performance for 5 hours, with duets and collabos, that would be something to admire!!
A girl I talked to in a bar after the show remarked that she didn't like Jay-Z because of the whole "retirement fail" fiasco. I had to explain it to her like this, when Jay-Z declared his retirement, he foresaw that he could not be a rapper/enertainer forever. He knew that he had to step into the background at some point in time. So as a 'reality check' he wanted to see who would take over from him? And what happened when Jay-Z retired? Who stepped up to the plate?

Nas put it perfectly, "Hip Hop Is Dead". So Jay felt that he had to come back and reclaim his throne. It definitely was not planned out this way, but in my mind, I see it shaping out like that. If you look at the generational gap, there are so many 'up and coming' new blood new artists that could one day be as great, or as legendary, but nobody has achieved the hiphop success that Jay-Z has put forth. With the Blueprint3 album, he surpassed Elvis Presley himself! Now that's a feat worth being proud of. As Jay remarked in the show, whenever you're in a certain industry, when you pass the KING of your craft, it's quite humbling.
This kid J.Cole looks pretty promising. His flow is nice, and he's got something to say in his lyrics.

I just hope that he doesn't turn out to be a victim of the industry, and/or fade into mediocrity.
More Pharell. Jay and Pharell have so many hits together, they could probably do a whole new album together also! Free ideas? LOL!

I think it would definitely be better than both of the R.Kelly collabos put together!
"How Would I Know HBO Would Get a Shot Of Us? Sitting So Close That We Almost Got Snot On Us?"

That's what Row Three Floor Seats gets you!
One big highlight of the show was when Jay brought Drake out! Drake got a chance to perform his hit "Successful" for the hometown Toronto folks!

For the first time possibly ever, Jay played hypeman to someone who doesn't even have an album out yet! Now that's impressive!
The one thing that I hate about all the Jay-Z shows I've seen is that he never performs the truly personal tracks. Those to me are the ones that let you see inside an artists mind and soul.

Tracks like, "Song Cry", "Lucky Me", "My First Song", "Ballad for the Fallen Soldier", and "Never Change". I guess I just imagine them being performed live, and have to settle for my iPod!
I will say this also for a live Jay-Z show: the audience is very diverse. It's not just the hiphop heads and the true OG 'Reasonable Doubt time' followers. There were so many cultures, races, and even age groups there in attendance. I guess when you have been at it for this long, and when your influence on the culture is so strong, you would be able to bring all the people out to see a show!

Oh yah, one other thing that impressed me for this show, not One single outfit change. Of course, you are saying, he's a rapper, why would he need to change outfits? I've seen it done before. I like the fact that it was just Jay on stage the entire set, all black everything, just him the whole show. He took off and put back on his chains throughout the show, but other than that, it was just Jay everyday.
One other benefit of being in Row Three on the floors, you sometimes get your face on the big screen! I didn't even realize I got on there until people told me that they saw my ugly face drooling!

Jay also likes to do this new routine which he debuted at the 9/11 Madison Square Garden show. I call it the "I See You" act, where he points out particular people in the audience and makes them feel good that he can actually see them, and point them out to the whole audience. It's not to make anyone feel silly, but it certainly makes people connected to the whole show experience.
I'm trying to figure out if and/or when he comes back to perform again in Toronto if I should go back to Row 3 Floors, or if I should just bite the bullet and go for the First Row itself.

I mean, I am a truly huge fan, but do I really want to be right right up front? Who am I kidding, of course I do!
All in all I said it best after the show, "Jay-Z on a bad day is still better to me than 2/3 of the performers that are out there right now." Not just because of my personal affinity for his music, but the whole crowd really got into the show. Everyone was dancing, singing, throwing up their ROC signs, it was fabulous!
I definitely will remember this performance for the ages. Thank you very much Shawn Carter for sharing the tour with us all. You really truly could have been on for at least another 2 hours, but I'm ok with what you gave us tonight!
And here's what I was busy filming footage of, while jumping up and down, dancing, and singing like a highschool girl!
Sorry for some of the blurriness, and for some of the jumping up and down, but when you are as close as I was, there were times where it truly felt like the ground was moving!!
